Small Town Story is about two families in a small Texas town dealing with the controversy over a high school production of Rent.
Scott Ames is usually the behind-the-scenes guy for the school musicals. He and his dad, Larry, have always been best of buddies, and have been keeping things light despite Scott’s mother’s having recently left them. Larry has encouraged Scott to audition for the school musical, but after Rent is announced as the show, Larry changes his mind and forbids him.
Because Scott is so enamored with drama club queen Caroline, he decides to audition. He gets cast as the lead and begins rehearsals. While the controversy over the show begins to brew in town, Larry keeps on telling people that he and Scott are staying out of it; after all, Larry says, Scott didn’t even audition. Scott formulates how he wants to tell the truth to his Dad.
