Small Town Story is about two families in a small Texas town dealing with the controversy over a high school production of Rent.

Lois Patterson has moved to Speargrove, Texas, from Brooklyn. Fiercely opinionated, she’s been defending Rent against the rest of the town’s rancor, despite the havoc it has wreaked on her relationship with her more conflicted teenage daughter.

Scott, who has left his father, Larry, over their disagreement about Rent, has been bunking at the Pattersons’ house for two nights. Lois encourages him to go home, despite his father’s opinion about the show. But Scott is too angry. Lois gives up, then sings to him:
